Franz Schmidt

Synopsis

Austrian composer, organist, and teacher

• Born in Pressburg on December 22, 1874
• Learned the piano from his mother
• He learned the organ and music theory from Father Felizian Josef Moczik
• 1888 moved to Vienna
• 1890 attended the conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde
• 1901-31 started teaching at the conservatory
• 1920's-1930's was given a honorary doctorate from the University of Vienna
• Died in Perchtoldsdorf nr Vienna on February 11, 1939

He expressed his opposition to the orchestral organ. He liked clarity with polyphony. He linked late romantic harmonies with traditional forms. He wrote for the organ from 1916-1935. He wrote Variations, toccatas, prelude and fugues, and chaconne. His works can be compared to Reger, though he writes more diatonically than Reger.
