German composer, organist, and teacher

  • 1732 born in Erfurt
  • Erfurt, studied with Jakob Adlung
  • 1748-50, Leipzig, studied with Johann Sebastian Bach
  • 1751-56, Langensalza, organist and teacher
  • 1756-1762, Erfurt, organist at Barfüßerkirche

  • 1801-1808, Erfurt, known organ composition period
  • 1809 died in Erfurt

Although he composed some larger pieces, such as the Grosse Präludien, Johann Christian Kittel preferred to compose pieces in a simple, liturgical style. This is evidenced in his work, Der angehende praktische Organist, oder Anweisung zum zweckmässigen Gebrauch der Orgel bei Gottesverehrungen in Beispielen, or The prospective practical organist, or instruction for expedient use of the organ in worship of God in examples. He also considered himself to be "grounded in the principles of Bach".

For details, see the Wikipedia article on Johann Christian Kittel.
