CHORAL

"[The Choral] is built on four elements.  The first, in A-flat, is the choral theme: it is stated in the Pedal and repeated in four parts on another manual.  After this exposition, a rhythmic element accompanied by an ''agitato'' counter-theme passes from A-flat minor through B minor and leads to a third theme in E minor.  This, in turn, is developed and, passing through E and the minor keys of F, D, and C, leads to a repeat of the chorale theme in C major in canon at the octave on the flutes.  The ''agitato'' leaves C minor, passes through G minor, F minor, E-flat minor, skims D-flat, and brings back the third theme in C minor.  Then, using a pivotal chord on the tritone of Db, the chorale reappears in B-flat minor and in A minor to prepare for its return in augmentation to the original key of A-fla major.  The ending presents the beginning of the subject accompanied by a figuration from the agitato in the bass that becomes the essential element of this peroration."<ref>Smith, Rollin.
