Synopsis

Though Nicolas de Grigny (1671-1703) died when he was only thirty-two years old, the French composer Nicholas de Grigny left an indelible mark on the organ world. During his brief career he was organist of the Rheims cathedral and he wrote several organ pieces. His compositions reflect his liturgical inspiration. They are beautifully intricate with heavy modal flavors. His poetic musicality was greatly admired by J.S. Bach, who once copied de Grigny's organ book in its entirety, confirming his place as an avid admirer.
