Synopsis
Czech composer and violinist. With a freedom from concerns over finances or the need to have his works performed, his organ works reflect the influence of his teachers and are technically demanding. His most popular work is the Passacaglia Quasi Cantata BACH from 1963. Some refer to this piece as the most difficult in all of organ literature. He composed for composition's sake, without the need of satisfying a patron or the public.
- 1913 born in Bučovice, Moravia
- 1929-1938 studied violin and composition at Brno Conservatory
- 1938-1945 studied composition in composition studies under Novák and Křička in Prague
- 1942-1973 served as violinist at the Prague National Theatre orchestra
- 1976 died in Malé Kyšice, Bohemia
