Synopsis
American organist and composer
- 1956 born in Newport Beach, California
- 1981 BMus Organ Performance from Brigham Young University. Chamberlain studied organ with Parley Belnap, and composition with Murray Boren and David Sargent.
- 1984 MMus in Organ Performance and Literature from Eastman School of Music, where he studied with David Craighead.
- 1985 became Vice-president and Tonal Director of M. L. Bigelow & Co., Inc., Organ Builders in American Fork, Utah.
- 1987 became the organist at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Salt Lake City.
Chamberlin is in the process of composing Hymn Voluntaries for each hymn in the 1985 edition of the LDS hymn books. According to his website, "Styles vary, but, with very few exceptions, in each voluntary the hymn tune is placed in some kind of counterpoint with itself, ranging from strict canons to simple ostinatos based on motifs derived from the hymn tune itself... I have tried to write as simply as possible without sacrificing contrapuntal integrity or harmonic interest." These voluntaries are useful both as prelude music and also for introductions and sometimes free accompaniments for hymns.
For more information or to purchase copies of his music, see David Chamberlin's website.
