- 1902 born in Hennstedt, Germany.
- 1933-1937 studied with Paul Hindemith in Berlin.
- 1938-1961 head of the church music department of the Academy of Music in Hamburg.
- 1962-1972 lived in the Black Forest.
- 1973 died in Hennstedt, Germany.
His style ranged from simple tonality to 12-tone technique.
