In Das alte Jahr vergangen ist the music sounds melancholy and the text is associated with the close of the calendar year.[1] The English translation of the text is as follows:

The old year now hath passed away;
We thank Thee, O our God to-day,
That Thou hast kept us through the year,
When danger and distress ere near.[2]
