The concerto has a serious and almost religious feel, and is neo-Baroque in some ways. The harmonies are lush. Much of the concerto is contemplative, with a few larger sections. Durufle premiered the work and advised Poulenc on registration. It is written for organ, chamber orchestra, and timpani. It is written in one continuous movement, with tempo changes.
