Chamberlin is in the process of composing Hymn Voluntaries for each hymn in the 1985 edition of the LDS hymn books. According to his website, "Styles vary, but, with very few exceptions, in each voluntary the hymn tune is placed in some kind of counterpoint with itself, ranging from strict canons to simple ostinatos based on motifs derived from the hymn tune itself... I have tried to write as simply as possible without sacrificing contrapuntal integrity or harmonic interest." These voluntaries are useful both as prelude music and also for introductions and sometimes free accompaniments for hymns.
