Background

The Pastoral is three-and-a-half pages long with only four pedal notes in the entire piece.

Registration and Organs

Swell: Stopped diapason 8', Soft flute 4'

Great: Clarinet 8', Nazard 2 2/3'

Pedal: Subbass 16', Stopped diapason 8'

The dynamic range for this work ranges from mezzo forte to pianissimo. The use of the expression pedal is required to go between piano and pianissimo dynamic levels.

Fingering and Pedaling

There are only four times when the pedal is played in this piece. In every instance, the pedal note is a whole note. At the final cadence, the pedal enters with two whole notes, a perfect fifth apart, that are played simultaneously.
