Background

Buxtehude's variation set of Ach Gott und Herr, BuxWV 177, consists of two verses. In the first verse, the chorale tune is found in the tenor voice in long note values with a half-note rest between each phrase of the chorale. In the second verse the tune appears in playfully virtuosic figurations, written in mostly 16th notes in the descant. The length of the first verse is 22 measures long, with the second variation being 20 measures. Staff notation on three staves, with four systems per page.

The cantus firmus in the first verse can be performed on a separate manual, or on a 4' stop in the pedal.
