Hilding Rosenberg

Synopsis

Swedish composer, organist, and teacher

• Born in Bosjokloster, Ringsjon, Skane on June 21, 1892
• In his boyhood he studied the piano and organ.
• He took an organ examination and held a post as an organist for several years, till 1914
• 1915 he attended the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm
• 1920 travelled to Berlin, Dresden, Vienna, and Paris
• 1920's studied counterpoint with Stenhammar
• Died in Stockholm, Sweden on May 19, 1985

1941-1961 Rosenberg did not write very much organ music. For his career he focused mainly on conducting so there are only a few organ works. His works started out with influence from the Lutheran chorales and Gregorian chant as well as Bach and Hindemith. In the 30's he used diatonic harmonies, and chromatic as more of embellishment. His later works in his other instruments are more toward 12 tone technique and atonality. His organ works are mostly in his earlier style. He is considered by many to be the leading figure in 20th c Swedish music.
