Karl Hasse
Synopsis
German composer, conductor and musicologist
- 1883, born in Dohna, near Dresden, Germany
- Studied with Riemann in Leipzig and Reger in Munich
- 1907 on assisted Wolfrum at Heidelberg University and in the Bachverein there.
- 1909 appointed organist and Kantor at the Johanniskirche, Chemnitz.
- 1910 appointed music director in Osnabrück, where he established a conservatory.
- 1919 appointed music director and professor extraordinary at Tübingen University.
- 1923 received his doctorate from Tübingen University. There he founded both the music institute and the university music department.
- 1933 became an enthusiastic supporter of the Third Reich.
- 1935 appointed director of the Staatliche Hochschule in Cologne, a post he retained until his retirement at the end of the war.
- 1960 died in Cologne, Germany
According to Oxford Music Online, Hasse was "one of the first to write a comprehensive study of Reger. His music never departed from the tradition which led back through Reger to Bach: craft and coherence were more important to him than personal expression or originality."
