Synopsis

English organist and composer

• 1766, born in Bristol
• 1772 or 1773, Briston, began studying organ with David Williams, local organist
• 1778, London, began attending Roman Catholic services, influencing him in the Roman liturgy
• 1787, London, suffered accident to skull which may have caused the depressive bouts which interrupted his career
• 1813-1817, London, regular organist at Covent Garden oratorio concerts
• 1824, London, appointed organist at Camden Chapel
• 1837, died in London

Being an English Bach enthusiast, he played an important role in the Bach revival in England. He is known for his sets of 12 and 14 short pieces and his voluntaries, in sets of 6 and 12.
